Ken Aston Camp 2023

From left to right: Advanced Referee Seyed Monemian (Region 678), National Referee Candidate Rebecca Stockwell (Region 678), Advanced Referee Candidate and Regional Commissioner Chris Stockwell (Region 678), National Referee Candidate and Area Referee Administrator Jenelle Hamilton (Region 677)

Four Area 10/S referees attended the 2023 Ken Aston Camp over this past weekend at Chapman University, in Orange.  The courses attended by our area included Referee Assessor and Advanced Referee Instructor.  This year’s principal instructor is Pedro Trejo Jr., Ph.D. Pedro is the Manager of Referee Development in U.S. Soccer’s Referee Programs Department. In addition to their regular course instruction, campers received additional instruction by Dr. Trejo regarding handball and penalty kicks.

Ken Aston Camp is a great way to receive fantastic training while having an opportunity to meet and learn with referees from all over the Southern California and beyond - there was a referee from New York attending camp this year!

Visit KenAstonCamps.org for more information about this great opportunity! I highly encourage regions to promote camp to their referees for 2024.

June Referee Mentor Course - ONLINE!

Going to Ken Aston this month?

Take the Referee Mentor Certificate course on June 21st and brag to your classmates on how you're a new certified referee mentor!

ABOUT THE COURSE

June 21st from 6:30pm-8:00pm

Sign up on AYSOU via your region's blue sombrero account/website.

The purpose of this course is to train already-certified referees to be certified mentors for less-experienced referees, including newly certified referees, youth referees, and referees seeking upgrades in their certification levels.

This training will be conducted via Google Chat. You will need to be able to participate with your camera on, view the screen, and participate in group sessions during the training.

The quiz, also be completed online (Google Form), will be available immediately following the training.

Currently, certification as a Referee Mentor requires you to:
  • Be at least 18 years old;
  • Have a Regional Referee Certification;
  • Have 25 games as a referee with at least 5 in 12U matches; and
  • Pass the Referee Mentor quiz with a score of 75% or better.
However, youth referee volunteers are welcome to participate in this training as the information benefits them when acting as a peer mentor both on and off the pitch.
